Snow Princess Hailey Cabled Hat

(Note: This pattern is copyright to me, and as such it means that it is available for personal use, gifting, and charity. You may also use it as a jumping off point for other patterns, if you like, but be sure to credit me.)

Fed up with trying to find “The perfect” hat pattern to make as a gift, I cast on for the Yarn Vomit scarf. I got fed up knitting the scarf, and began trying to figure out how to turn it into a hat.
Lo and Behold, the Snow Princess Hailey Cabled Hat.

2 skeins sport/baby weight yarn. I used Lion Brand Jamie Baby (2 skeins, 193 yards. #200, white. 100% acrylic.)
1 set size 6 DPNs. I used 4 DPNs.
Darning Needle.

2 skeins DK/worsted yarn

1 set size 8 dpns (I used 4)

Note: You wil be using two strands held together as one. Make sure your yarn is thin enough for this. Alternatively, you may use 1 strand of worsted for the child size, and 1 strand of bulky for the adult size.

5 sts. x 8 rows = 1″ in stockinette, worked in the round

3 sts x 4/5 rows = 1″ in stockinette, worked in the round.

(Note: Both sizes are worked in the exact same way.)

Work as for Yarn Vomit Scarf for 27 cable twists.
(Excerpt from Yarn Vomit Scarf Pattern)

To work the C4B:
slip 2 sts to Cable Needle, hold in back of work. Knit 2, knit 2 from Cable needle.

Next Row: K1, * K1, P2, K4, P2 * Repeat from * to * until 2 sts remain. K2.
Work stitch pattern from here onward, until it’s your desired length.
To Finish:
End on Row 4. Knit 4 rows of whatever your beginning pattern was. Bind off knitwise.
(end excerpt.)

Sew C/O and B/O edges together.

Pick up 61 stitches along edge, distrubuting them over 3 needles. Make sure you keep the needles lined upw ith the seam in back.

Work 12 rounds in stockinette stitch.
Decrease Row 1) K8, k2tog.
Knit 1 round.
Decrease round 2) K7, K2tog.
Knit 1 round
Decrease round 3) K6, K2tog.
Knit 1 round.

Follow in this manner until the last row, which will be K2tog all the way around.

Break yarn and leave a long (8″) tail. Thread this through a darning needle, and slip the remaining 6 stitches off the DPNs, and onto the darning needle. Pull up tight and knot on the inside.

  1. Unfortunatly, no I do not. The hat was originally sent to a friend, at her boyfriend’s address. Unbfortunatly, if his name is not on the package, the post office there sends it back. I have not yet receieved the package, and I don’t think I will. Which means I’ll have to knit another hat.
